Here are five surprising strategies to help you build stronger, more meaningful human connections in your coaching practice—free from any sense of pretense or insincerity.



One of the most effective ways to connect deeply with clients is to lead with openness. Sharing your own experiences—particularly the struggles or failures that have shaped you—can break down barriers. For example, I once worked with a client who was struggling to launch a business.


During our sessions, I shared my own story about a failed venture early in my career. I explained how I wrestled with self-doubt and the fear of starting over but eventually found clarity by focusing on small, manageable steps. That moment of openness created a shift in our dynamic; my client felt seen and understood and, more importantly, encouraged to keep going.


It isn’t about offering a solution but about meeting them where they are with honesty.

Being fully present during conversations is another essential aspect of building deeper relationships. Active listening transforms a session into a safe space for clients to truly express themselves. This means going beyond hearing words—it’s about tuning in to emotions and subtext. I recall a client once sharing how overwhelmed they felt balancing family and work.


Rather than rushing to provide advice, I simply said, “That sounds incredibly heavy. What feels hardest about this right now?” That question opened the door to a profound discussion, where they uncovered deeper challenges they hadn’t previously acknowledged. Sometimes, it’s the simple act of listening that allows clients to access their own answers.


Sharing resources with your clients in a meaningful way can also deepen your bond.

Recommending tools, books, or podcasts that have personally influenced you shows that you’re invested in their journey. For instance, I recently shared a book on leadership that helped me navigate a tough period of growth. When I followed up during our next session, they mentioned how one chapter completely reframed how they approached a difficult team dynamic. These shared experiences create a sense of partnership and trust.


You can also create new avenues for connection by introducing unconventional approaches to your coaching sessions. A creative exercise or even a simple change of environment can lead to deeper insights. I once had a walking session with a client who was feeling stuck in their career. The movement allowed us both to relax, and they ended up sharing fears and aspirations that hadn’t surfaced during previous sessions. The conversation flowed more naturally, leading to breakthroughs that hadn’t emerged before.


Finally, one of the simplest but most powerful ways to nurture a strong connection is through thoughtful follow-ups. A week after that walking session, I sent my client a quick message with a quote I thought aligned with their goals. That small gesture sparked another conversation and reinforced our connection, reminding them they weren’t navigating their challenges alone.


Coaching isn’t just about delivering advice or strategies—it’s about building relationships that inspire growth and transformation. By opening up, being present, sharing impactful resources, inviting new approaches, and following through with care, you can create connections that leave a lasting impression on your clients and empower them to thrive.
